Foley Sounds

Technical Summary:

Foley sounds are a concept I hadn't heard of before, but was aware that a big part of games was the sound design to build immersion. Foley is the technique of using real world items and manipulating them to fit a specific scenario or creating a very specific sound. I learned some more information on this technique through the behind the scenes' episode of Lux from the most recent series of Doctor Who, where they recorded Foley sounds of popcorn crunching and movie tapes, so to be able to do this for our own project was something I was greatly interested in.

This was my first ever use of these sound techniques, so using the Zoom Recorder and Shotgun Mic, it was so incredible hearing everyday sounds in such a high quality and detailed level. One of the sounds that stood out significantly to me was the snapping of carrots, sounding eerily close to what you'd imagine the snapping of bones to sound like.

Reflection:

At this stage, we haven't gone through any of the sounds to use for the project as it isn't something we've significantly focused on like the mechanics or some simple world building. Some of these sounds will be useful to use, and the experience gained by using the technology will be very beneficial in the future, although there are definitely some sounds we'll have to acquire a different way. In the future, I should also plan ahead so that I know for what sounds are required without having to think about it off the top of my head.
