Role Application

Technical Summary:

When taking on the Role Application project, I wanted to appeal to the role that I enjoy the most and what I wanted to take up for Synoptic Project. When I began the idea process, I wanted to create a world in which had places to search an explore similar to Skyrim and other Elder Scrolls Games. I wanted to capture this emersion of an environment that was lived in and prospering inside of a world, and with my original idea being a large take, I decided to shrink it down to just one location.

All of my environment assets were used from FAB to help me speed up the process of making this environment, it also allowed for me to focus more on how I built up the world and what I included inside of it. One of the big hitters on the frame rates of games come down to how the scene is lit, and with the world having so many of the same, it was having a large impact on performance. To counteract this, I gave all my light sources a collision box that when the player was inside would light up the house, and when they left it would switch off again to help with the frames.

I also created a symmetrical style to my map, allowing for specific sections to be allocated to something interesting to my environment, this being my abandoned house. In hear, I added cobwebs and removed chunks of the house to sell the abandoned style. I also added an NPC into the home as this shady type of person.

I also focused a lot on playability inside of the world, including a pick up and drop system, alongside sprinting and attacking when holding the sword. I wanted to stay true to my idea of a quest game like Skyrim, including an objective system to guide the player.

Reflection:

In terms of how I could improve on this, noticeably the main menu has the player UI added to it instead of just the Main Menu, a couple of the positions of the lights are slightly off, as seen towards the end of the video. I think this also helped me gain a sense of scale and understanding as to what I can realistically achieve in a shortened timescale. I also didn't plan out everything to the best of my abilities, I didn't know what I needed or wanted until I was pulling random pieces together on Thursday, so a list of assets that I want to include would have benefitted me in this situation. However, there is still a large chunk of quality and features in this small project that I am just as happy with to capture what I love working on in games. Moving forward, I will focus on enhancing my own personal workflow and how I approach some elements whilst also continuing to focus on finding issues with my own works and improve on them.
