Sounds

Technical Summary:

During Gold, we didn't spend a great amount of time adding additional sounds to the game, but added several new sounds to the Break Out Method, mainly when you unlock the gate to the battering ram and when you destroy the spaceport wall. We also added a sound to the crafting UI when you craft an item, so you finally know if you have crafted something. We also wanted to add more sounds to the Market, adding a shop jingle, and a cash register sound when you purchase something. With the music, we needed it to play over the UI, but all the previous sounds had used the play sound 2D which eventually runs out when the music stops, but this also meant we needed to stop this sound when we exited the UI or else it would play throughout the rest of the players experience until it finally finished. For this, we made the piece of music into a variable that we could activate at the creation of the UI and then deactivate when we closed the UI.

Reflection:

These sounds continued to help us build on the immersion of the environment, though only being smaller sounds. There is definitely still some areas that could benefit from additional sounds, such as the bribery method having sounds for the cash register, and even looking at adding some gibberish sounds for the Martians and Redcoats to add some more personality to them. In future, we should make a list of sounds we should include and playthrough the different methods to locate areas of significant silence, even looking at including music in the background.
